An introduction to ERP demos

Updated:

Your company is shopping for a new ERP system. Whether this is your first implementation or a replacement, the search often begins online. Your initial research has likely introduced you to the first type of ERP demo available from many vendors - the video presentation.

Video ERP demos

These demos are quick to watch and can provide some insight into the utility of an ERP for your business. They showcase user interface layouts but offer only a brief glimpse into the system's workings.

Remember, these are marketing tools designed to highlight the vendor's strengths while glossing over or omitting weaknesses and areas where they lack a competitive advantage. Watch a few of these for vendors on your shortlist, then discuss them with your team to compare notes. One system might stand out during your next level of comparisons due to a video demonstration.

Self-run ERP demos

Some ERP vendors offer self-run demos, though not all do. These provide you with a user ID and password, allowing you to explore the system independently.

Many of these are excellent tools to assist in your selection process, while others may be limited, offering only a few part numbers for testing purchase orders or sales fulfillment. Even so, if they align well with your key selection criteria, this type of demo could aid in your decision-making.

Traditional vendor-led ERP demos

Traditional vendor-led demos remain the most effective way to thoroughly evaluate an ERP system and assess how it meets your critical requirements. These demos come in various formats.

Control the demonstration

Demonstrators will showcase what they know best and may avoid features that previous prospects have questioned. Retrieve your list of essential ERP factors that are crucial for achieving your goals.

ERP vendors typically have a preset script for their demonstrations. They might be reluctant to share it, but it's important to insist. Their demos are designed to make the best impression and drive sales.

Obtain the script in advance and ensure it covers your essential factors with adequate time allocated. Identify the features that would be nice to have and eliminate any irrelevant ones from the demonstration. With your tailored demonstration script set, allow the demonstrator to showcase their system. Sit back and take detailed notes.
